Nature, Culture and Future

The 28th Caretakers of the Environment International Conference ‘Nature, Culture and Future’ took place in Yilan, Taiwan from 6th to 12th July 2014, hosted by Earth Charter Taiwan (ECT) with support from the public sector, NGOs, enterprises, the Yilan county government, Yilan Huey-Deng High school and several local schools.

The CEI 2014 Conference accommodated 144 international delegates from 15 countries including 10 European countries, Russia, USA and 3 Asian countries. There were 75 local teacher and student delegates and dozens of volunteers and helpers.

During the 6-day conference, 41student projects were presented through oral presentations and a poster exhibition. The subjects included organic agriculture, community gardens, edible landscape, aboriginal culture, traditional food, energy, recycle and reuse… etc.

The main conference venues and accommodation were inside Huey-Deng High School. During field trips, participants visited historical sites, museums, organic farms, aboriginal tribes, rivers and mountains to discover the cultural and natural diversity of Yilan. Several seminars and workshops covered the topics of food safety and sovereignty, permaculture, sustainable development, case studies of environmental education, international and local environmental initiatives and debates.

There were also various hands-on activities and social events that encouraged participants to learn and make new friends, such as cultural night performance, catwalk show, sports and team games. One of the highlights was “Food & Fun Market”, an initiative event inspired of night market culture in Taiwan. Through hosting stalls, delegates from different countries shared their traditional food, arts, and games with all caretakers.
